Many automotive facilities will claim to have "certified technicians" or "ASE certified technicians". ASE certification is an independent verification of a technician's abilities. For more information regarding ASE certifications, visit www.asecert.org. Make sure you ASK TO SEE the certification and make sure it is related to the services you are receiving.

Work Experience

ASK about technician's work experience.

While certification is important, it is also important to make sure your technician has relevant experience with the services you are receiving.

Dr. Smog has been specializing in emissions related repairs and adjustments for the past five years in Las Vegas, where he was certified by the State of Nevada , Department of Motor Vehicles, as an Authorized Emissions Repair Specialist. He also performed A/C services, computer diagnostic services, and various other repair services.

Prior to that he worked at and managed a Lube and Tune facility in Las Vegas . He has also worked at car dealerships in California , Nevada and Tennessee and is GM factory trained.

Pricing

ASK how the labor is calculated and what the labor rate is.

There are shops that do not use accurate labor schedules or will make up a price based off of what they think you can pay. This is an unfortunate practice. However, there are publicly available labor time schedules. You can find out information for your vehicle with AllData consumer edition under the parts and labor section as well as various other sources that you can obtain by a simple search engine search.

Dr. Smog uses AllData to compute labor times and quotes all repairs based off of this program.

Services

ASK why the service is needed.

ASK to see parts. Make sure parts were actually replaced.

ASK to see fluids that need replaced.

ASK to see new fluids.

ASK what service is being performed specifically. 

Any reputable shop or technician should be more than happy to help you understand your vehicle. They should be more than willing to show you the wear on a part that needs replaced, show you the part that was replaced, show you gunk that needs cleaned, and answer your questions.

Warranty's

ASK what is the part warranty as well as the labor warranty.

Not every place will guarantee their parts and labor. Make sure you find out specifically the warranty that is offered.

At Dr. Smog's we stand by our work and parts. We pass along the parts warranty to the customer on all parts purchased from us and go beyond that by backing our labor for the full warranty of the part. So, if a part has a 1 year / 12,000 mile warranty, we match it for labor.

Licenses and Insurance

ASK if your repair facility is licensed and insured.

Many people and facilities will work on your vehicle without proper business licenses or without insurance. This leaves you vulnerable if anything happens to your vehicle. Make sure that the facilities you use have proper licensing and insurance.

We are licensed by Sumner County as well as Hendersonville and have current insurance.
